ScripTeast is organized by the Independent Film Foundation.
- Programme description
ScripTeast selects the 12 the best full-length theatrical feature film scripts that have been written by the best authors of Eastern and Central European origin, and helps to master them in terms of international potential, with assistance and advice from internationally-acclaimed professionals.
- General programme schedule
Each edition of ScripTeast includes a Lab in Poland, two stationary sessions during the Berlin and Cannes film festivals, with two online sessions in between.
ScripTeast Lab
The ScripTeast Lab lasts for 7 days between late September and early October and is held in Poland. The Lab consists of:
- individual one-to-one meetings with Creative Advisors and Heads of Studies;
- lectures, film screenings and case studies;
- pitching training;
- film library access.
First online session
After the Lab, at least one Creative Advisor will be assigned to each of the participating projects, and will remain available for the writer(s) during the first online session. Writer(s) are obliged to submit a new version of the script before the end of December. Everybody works via an e-learning tool under the supervision of the Heads of Studies and ScripTeast team.
Stationary session during Berlinale
A 3-day session in February in Berlin during the Berlin International Film Festival to evaluate how work on the scripts is progressing. The session includes:
- consultations from Heads of Studies about new versions of scripts;
- participation in festival screenings and events;
- meetings with professionals, essential for international networking;
- thanks to cooperation between ScripTeast and the Talent Campus, writers also take part in meetings and discussions within the Talent Campus.
Second online session
After session in Berlin, participants will have one and a half months to write up the next draft, with support available from the Heads of Studies and ScripTeast team.
Final stationary session in Cannes
A 7-day final session in May in Cannes during the Cannes Festival brings work on the scripts to an end, and focuses on promoting them and their authors within the audiovisual industry. The session includes:
- meetings with representatives of the world audiovisual industry;
- meetings with ACE members;
- thanks to cooperation with the Marché du Film writers take part in Producers Network meetings;
- participation in festival screenings and events;
- closing gala with presentation of the Krzysztof Kieslowski ScripTeast Award for Best Eastern and Central European Script – 10,000 euro for the - writer(s) of one of the participating projects selected by the Advisory Board.
- Creative Advisors and Heads of Studies
The Programme’s Creative Advisors are internationally-acclaimed scriptwriters, directors, producers and other professionals whose work has had an impact that reaches far beyond their own country, and who form a group comprising a variety of generations and cultural backgrounds. Among them will be two Heads of Studies, both experienced lecturers, who will assist the other Creative Advisors with methodological matters.
- Advisory Board
During the Final Session at Cannes IFF, the ScripTeast international Advisory Board will vote on the Krzysztof Kieslowski ScripTeast Award for Best Eastern and Central European Script.
- Language
The working language of all ScripTeast meetings and events is English, so a good knowledge of English is essential for participation. In limited, exceptional cases, however, there is the possibility of interpreter support for one-on-one meetings, but only with the specific consent of ScripTeast’s Artistic Director.
- Selection process
Up to 12 full-length theatrical feature film scripts will be selected for the Programme.
The selection is based on three factors:
- script quality,
- the author’s track record,
- estimated project's chances of being produced.
Selections are made entirely at the discretion of the Organiser. The Organiser reserves the right not to explain or communicate the reasons why a script has not been selected.
Shortlisted applicants will be informed at the end of August.
The final selection will be announced by September 10 at the latest.
- Application process
The deadline for this year’s applications is July 31. There is no application fee.
Applicants must be nationals or residents of countries participating in the MEDIA Programme. However, ScripTeast has been developed to focus on scriptwriters originating in Central and Eastern European countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.
Applicants must provide a credit for at least one theatrical feature film, or one television feature film or series that has been produced already, or must have extensive experience as a writer, journalist or director.
Scripts must be already completed or nearing completion. Participants should be open and willing to receive advice from the Creative Advisors and Heads of Studies.
The submitted feature film script must be an original work, and shooting cannot commence before the end of April next year.
Regardless of the number of writers, no more than two of them per script may apply to participate: writer submitting the project and one of co-writers. Writer wishing to participate additionally to the writer submitting the project, must state this clearly in the application form. Charges for them are different (please see point 10).
EACH WRITER AND/OR RIGHTS OWNER MUST CONFIRM THE SCRIPT’S SUBMISSION TO SCRIPTEAST AND SIGN THE APPLICATION FORM.
The script must not participate in any other scriptwriters’ training programme at the time of participation in ScripTeast.
- Application package
The application package in English should contain:
- Signed original application form;
- Script (2 copies, UNBOUND);
- Synopsis (250-300 words);
- CV (including professional experience, achievements and awards);
- Cover letter stating the following:
•motivation and expectations for participation in ScripTeast,
•estimated project's chances of being produced;
-Additional materials / DVD with samples of previous work (by post only).
The application package should be sent in two ways:

Applications will not be accepted by fax, and WILL NOT BE RETURNED.
Unselected applications will be disposed of safely.
- Charges
Participation fee – 300 euro per person participating in the ScripTeast, to be paid no later than two weeks prior to the beginning of the ScripTeast Lab.
Second writer participating additionally to the writer submitting the project must beside the participation fee cover also costs arising from his/her presence at the stationary sessions: travel costs, hotel and subsistence.
A contribution to ScripTeast of 0.2% of the project production budget to ScripTeast (but not more than 5 000 euro). This contribution is to be paid no later than on the first day of principal shooting. These funds will be used to organise the next editions of the Programme. The obligation for the contribution payment is valid from the completion of the Lab no mater if the project continues with the programme, withdrew or was excluded.
- Bursaries and grants
Two scholarships (covering all participation costs) are available for two projects. Applicants should submit a letter of application for a scholarship addressed to the Managing Director of the Programme, outlining the circumstances and reasons for requesting a scholarship. Special consideration will be given to applicants from countries with a relatively limited film industry.
- Participants’ obligations
Participants who are invited for the Programme are obliged to pay a participation fee to Organizer’s bank account following the selection announcement, and no later than two weeks before the start of the ScripTeast Lab. Non‑payment may result in exclusion from ScripTeast.
Second writer participating additionally to the writer submitting the project must pay the amount agreed with the Organizer covering costs arising from his/her presence at the stationary sessions to Organizer’s bank account following the selection announcement, and no later than two weeks before the start of the ScripTeast Lab.
Participants have to sign the participation agreement before the ScripTeast Lab.
Participants are personally obliged to take part in ScripTeast’s entire year-long Programme and be fully dedicated to the it during the sessions. Activities unrelated to the ScripTeast project are not allowed during the stationary session period.
If a participant fails to attend any session without giving a serious reason, he/she must reimburse all costs incurred by the Organiser from the beginning of the Programme. The same applies in cases where participants withdraw from the Programme before the end of ScripTeast. The paid participation fee will be deducted from those costs and are not refundable.
Participants are obliged to rewrite their scripts after the Lab and before the end of December, and must also submit the final version for the Krzysztof Kieslowski ScripTeast Award before the specified deadline.
- Rights-owners’ obligations
The rights owner (if not the writer) has to sign the appendix to the project’s participation agreement before the ScripTeast Lab.
The rights owner (if not the writer) is obliged to provide the Organiser with a certified English translation of a valid company registration document before the Lab.
- Credits
Since writer(s) participation in the ScripTeast Lab the credit <>b“Developed with the assistance of ScripTeast” and the Programme logo must be placed in a visible way:
- at the front page of all subsequent versions of the script in any language, in electronic and printed forms;
- in the credits of any film produced from the script, no matter from which version.
Failure to fulfill this condition may be the basis for the Organizer’s request to return costs of writer(s) taking part in the Programme: travel costs, hotel and subsistence and the costs of organization of the Programme (approximately 25 000 euros).
- Final provisions
Selected scripts may be excluded from ScripTeast if:
- the participating writer(s) does not pay the 300 euro participation fee before the Lab;
- the participating writer(s) and/or rights owner does not sign the agreement and/or appendix to the project’s participation agreement;
- the rights owner does not provide a certified English translation of a valid company registration document before the Lab;
- the participating writer(s) fails or refuses to adhere to the Programme obligations.
The decision to exclude the project from the program remains at the discretion of the Organizer.
